Revision, frustration, and success. Electro-pop artist and scientist Mpathy is very familiar with these three stages. The multi-dimensional musician from Cambridge, Massachusetts pens tunes just as he plans experiments: the songs first come swirling into his consciousness in a flurry of notes and sounds, eventually forcing him to create a methodology for figuring out how to move from an idea to a finished product.
According to Mpathy, his passion for music and science is completely logical: “These two are not adversarial; one could not exist without the other. They are forever linked by the passion to create, design, and discover.”
For his new album, The Golden Boy, Mpathy blended the essence of his favorite rock bands, including Sigur Ros and R.E.M., with the pop element of music from artists such as Justin Timberlake and Demi Lovato.
The result of this brave experiment is a 12-song collection of electro-pop, new wave, and folk. Lead single “The Golden Boy” is an electro-pop anthem based entirely on the night terrors that have forever haunted Mpathy while sleeping.
Mpathy began playing music as a teenager for the purpose of overcoming his introverted nature. He released his first album soon after, resulting in the sale of a couple thousand copies and Mpathy getting signed and touring around the world.
After experiencing the devastation of being dropped by his label, Mpath sold all his instruments and refused to participate in anything related to music. Mpathy eventually emerged from his musical dormancy when he joined a band called Pleasant Sweaters.
It was while with Pleasant Sweaters that Mpathy rediscovered the joy of blending sounds to flesh out musical ideas. He released another EP, Impossible Space, which revealed the seeds of the intriguing and dynamic darkwave and shoegaze songs that are heard on The Golden Boy.
